French Song Workshop - The Songs of Gabriel Faure

This term I shall be giving together with soprano Mhairi Lawson a workshop on performance of French song and the songs of Gabriel Faure at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. Our first session will be a presentation on Friday, 17th January 2014, 5pm. This is open to the public.

We shall be discussing issues concerning social and cultural norms in 19th century Paris, the evolution and style of French song, the main characteristics of this genre in comparison with English or German song and Faure's wishes and intentions with regard to the performance of his songs. We shall listen to some old recordings from the beginning of the 20th centeury and rehearse the song Mai infront of the students and the public.  Private working sessions with students of the Guildhall will follow this presentation and a final public session will take place at the end of March.
